Positive Sentiment Still Eludes AdvanSix Inc. (NYSE:ASIX) Following 27% Share Price Slump

The AdvanSix Inc. (NYSE:ASIX) share price has fared very poorly over the last month, falling by a substantial 27%. Instead of being rewarded, shareholders who have already held through the last twelve months are now sitting on a 31% share price drop.

After such a large drop in price, AdvanSix's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 11.6x might make it look like a buy right now compared to the market in the United States, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios above 16x and even P/E's above 30x are quite common. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the reduced P/E.

While the market has experienced earnings growth lately, AdvanSix's earnings have gone into reverse gear, which is not great. The P/E is probably low because investors think this poor earnings performance isn't going to get any better. If you still like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

How Is AdvanSix's Growth Trending?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as low as AdvanSix's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the market.

If we review the last year of earnings, dishearteningly the company's profits fell to the tune of 18%. As a result, earnings from three years ago have also fallen 67% overall. Therefore, it's fair to say the earnings growth recently has been undesirable for the company.

Turning to the outlook, the next year should generate growth of 110% as estimated by the two analysts watching the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the market is forecast to only expand by 14%, which is noticeably less attractive.

With this information, we find it odd that AdvanSix is trading at a P/E lower than the market. Apparently some shareholders are doubtful of the forecasts and have been accepting significantly lower selling prices.

The Final Word

AdvanSix's recently weak share price has pulled its P/E below most other companies. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-earnings ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

We've established that AdvanSix currently trades on a much lower than expected P/E since its forecast growth is higher than the wider market. When we see a strong earnings outlook with faster-than-market growth, we assume potential risks are what might be placing significant pressure on the P/E ratio. It appears many are indeed anticipating earnings instability, because these conditions should normally provide a boost to the share price.
