These 4 Measures Indicate That Tenet Healthcare (NYSE:THC) Is Using Debt Extensively

Warren Buffett famously said, 'Volatility is far from synonymous with risk.' So it might be obvious that you need to consider debt, when you think about how risky any given stock is, because too much debt can sink a company. Importantly, Tenet Healthcare Corporation (NYSE:THC) does carry debt. But is this debt a concern to shareholders?

Why Does Debt Bring Risk?

Debt assists a business until the business has trouble paying it off, either with new capital or with free cash flow. In the worst case scenario, a company can go bankrupt if it cannot pay its creditors. However, a more usual (but still expensive) situation is where a company must dilute shareholders at a cheap share price simply to get debt under control. Of course, the upside of debt is that it often represents cheap capital, especially when it replaces dilution in a company with the ability to reinvest at high rates of return. The first step when considering a company's debt levels is to consider its cash and debt together.

What Is Tenet Healthcare's Net Debt?

The chart below, which you can click on for greater detail, shows that Tenet Healthcare had US$12.6b in debt in March 2025; about the same as the year before. However, it does have US$3.00b in cash offsetting this, leading to net debt of about US$9.57b.

A Look At Tenet Healthcare's Liabilities

According to the last reported balance sheet, Tenet Healthcare had liabilities of US$4.45b due within 12 months, and liabilities of US$16.1b due beyond 12 months. On the other hand, it had cash of US$3.00b and US$3.81b worth of receivables due within a year. So it has liabilities totalling US$13.8b more than its cash and near-term receivables, combined.

This is a mountain of leverage even relative to its gargantuan market capitalization of US$15.9b. Should its lenders demand that it shore up the balance sheet, shareholders would likely face severe dilution.

We measure a company's debt load relative to its earnings power by looking at its net debt divided by its earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) and by calculating how easily its earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) cover its interest expense (interest cover). Thus we consider debt relative to earnings both with and without depreciation and amortization expenses.

Tenet Healthcare's net debt is sitting at a very reasonable 2.3 times its EBITDA, while its EBIT covered its interest expense just 4.2 times last year. While that doesn't worry us too much, it does suggest the interest payments are somewhat of a burden. If Tenet Healthcare can keep growing EBIT at last year's rate of 14% over the last year, then it will find its debt load easier to manage. When analysing debt levels, the balance sheet is the obvious place to start. But it is future earnings, more than anything, that will determine Tenet Healthcare's ability to maintain a healthy balance sheet going forward. So if you're focused on the future you can check out this free report showing analyst profit forecasts.

Finally, while the tax-man may adore accounting profits, lenders only accept cold hard cash. So we always check how much of that EBIT is translated into free cash flow. Looking at the most recent three years, Tenet Healthcare recorded free cash flow of 41% of its EBIT, which is weaker than we'd expect. That's not great, when it comes to paying down debt.

Our View

Tenet Healthcare's level of total liabilities and interest cover definitely weigh on it, in our esteem. But we do take some comfort from its EBIT growth rate. It's also worth noting that Tenet Healthcare is in the Healthcare industry, which is often considered to be quite defensive. We think that Tenet Healthcare's debt does make it a bit risky, after considering the aforementioned data points together. That's not necessarily a bad thing, since leverage can boost returns on equity, but it is something to be aware of. There's no doubt that we learn most about debt from the balance sheet. But ultimately, every company can contain risks that exist outside of the balance sheet. For example Tenet Healthcare has 3 warning signs (and 1 which shouldn't be ignored) we think you should know about.
