Shareholders Will Be Pleased With The Quality of GeneDx Holdings' (NASDAQ:WGS) Earnings
When companies post strong earnings, the stock generally performs well, just like GeneDx Holdings Corp.'s (NASDAQ:WGS) stock has recently. We did some digging and found some further encouraging factors that investors will like.
In order to understand the potential for per share returns, it is essential to consider how much a company is diluting shareholders. In fact, GeneDx Holdings increased the number of shares on issue by 5.2% over the last twelve months by issuing new shares. As a result, its net income is now split between a greater number of shares. To talk about net income, without noticing earnings per share, is to be distracted by the big numbers while ignoring the smaller numbers that talk to per share value. You can see a chart of GeneDx Holdings' EPS by clicking here.
A Look At The Impact Of GeneDx Holdings' Dilution On Its Earnings Per Share (EPS)
GeneDx Holdings was losing money three years ago. Zooming in to the last year, we still can't talk about growth rates coherently, since it made a loss last year. What we do know is that while it's great to see a profit over the last twelve months, that profit would have been better, on a per share basis, if the company hadn't needed to issue shares. And so, you can see quite clearly that dilution is influencing shareholder earnings.
If GeneDx Holdings' EPS can grow over time then that drastically improves the chances of the share price moving in the same direction. However, if its profit increases while its earnings per share stay flat (or even fall) then shareholders might not see much benefit. For the ordinary retail shareholder, EPS is a great measure to check your hypothetical "share" of the company's profit.

How Do Unusual Items Influence Profit?
Alongside that dilution, it's also important to note that GeneDx Holdings' profit suffered from unusual items, which reduced profit by US$18m in the last twelve months. While deductions due to unusual items are disappointing in the first instance, there is a silver lining. When we analysed the vast majority of listed companies worldwide, we found that significant unusual items are often not repeated. And, after all, that's exactly what the accounting terminology implies. GeneDx Holdings took a rather significant hit from unusual items in the year to September 2025. As a result, we can surmise that the unusual items made its statutory profit significantly weaker than it would otherwise be.
Our Take On GeneDx Holdings' Profit Performance
To sum it all up, GeneDx Holdings took a hit from unusual items which pushed its profit down; without that, it would have made more money. But unfortunately the dilution means that shareholders now own a smaller proportion of the company (assuming they maintained the same number of shares). That will weigh on earnings per share, even if it is not reflected in net income. Considering all the aforementioned, we'd venture that GeneDx Holdings' profit result is a pretty good guide to its true profitability, albeit a bit on the conservative side.
