Improved Revenues Required Before Neogen Corporation (NASDAQ:NEOG) Stock's 33% Jump Looks Justified
Those holding Neogen Corporation (NASDAQ:NEOG) shares would be relieved that the share price has rebounded 33% in the last thirty days, but it needs to keep going to repair the recent damage it has caused to investor portfolios. Still, the 30-day jump doesn't change the fact that longer term shareholders have seen their stock decimated by the 51% share price drop in the last twelve months.
Even after such a large jump in price, Neogen's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1.6x might still make it look like a buy right now compared to the Medical Equipment industry in the United States, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios above 3x and even P/S above 7x are quite common. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the reduced P/S.

What Does Neogen's Recent Performance Look Like?
While the industry has experienced revenue growth lately, Neogen's revenue has gone into reverse gear, which is not great. Perhaps the P/S remains low as investors think the prospects of strong revenue growth aren't on the horizon. So while you could say the stock is cheap, investors will be looking for improvement before they see it as good value.

Neogen's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver limited growth, and importantly, perform worse than the industry.
Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 2.5%. However, a few very strong years before that means that it was still able to grow revenue by an impressive 76% in total over the last three years. Accordingly, while they would have preferred to keep the run going, shareholders would definitely welcome the medium-term rates of revenue growth.
Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to climb by 1.8% per annum during the coming three years according to the three analysts following the company. With the industry predicted to deliver 10% growth per annum, the company is positioned for a weaker revenue result.
With this information, we can see why Neogen is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on while the company is potentially eyeing a less prosperous future.
What We Can Learn From Neogen's P/S?
The latest share price surge wasn't enough to lift Neogen's P/S close to the industry median. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
As expected, our analysis of Neogen's analyst forecasts confirms that the company's underwhelming revenue outlook is a major contributor to its low P/S. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn't great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
