Investors Still Aren't Entirely Convinced By Spectral AI, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:MDAI) Revenues Despite 43% Price Jump
Those holding Spectral AI, Inc. (NASDAQ:MDAI) shares would be relieved that the share price has rebounded 43% in the last thirty days, but it needs to keep going to repair the recent damage it has caused to investor portfolios. But the last month did very little to improve the 52% share price decline over the last year.
Even after such a large jump in price, Spectral AI may still be sending very bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1.2x, since almost half of all companies in the Medical Equipment industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 3.3x and even P/S higher than 7x are not unusual. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly reduced P/S.

How Has Spectral AI Performed Recently?
With revenue growth that's inferior to most other companies of late, Spectral AI has been relatively sluggish. Perhaps the market is expecting the current trend of poor revenue growth to continue, which has kept the P/S suppressed. If you still like the company, you'd be hoping revenue doesn't get any worse and that you could pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as depressed as Spectral AI's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry decidedly.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered virtually the same number to the company's top line as the year before. Although pleasingly revenue has lifted 31% in aggregate from three years ago, notwithstanding the last 12 months. So while the company has done a solid job in the past, it's somewhat concerning to see revenue growth decline as much as it has.
Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 33% per year as estimated by the six analysts watching the company. With the industry only predicted to deliver 9.3% per annum, the company is positioned for a stronger revenue result.
With this information, we find it odd that Spectral AI is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. Apparently some shareholders are doubtful of the forecasts and have been accepting significantly lower selling prices.
The Bottom Line On Spectral AI's P/S
Even after such a strong price move, Spectral AI's P/S still trails the rest of the industry. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.
To us, it seems Spectral AI currently trades on a significantly depressed P/S given its forecasted revenue growth is higher than the rest of its industry. There could be some major risk factors that are placing downward pressure on the P/S ratio. It appears the market could be anticipating revenue instability, because these conditions should normally provide a boost to the share price.
