Align Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ:ALGN) shareholders should be happy to see the share price up 11% in the last month. But over the last three years we've seen a quite serious decline. Regrettably, the share price slid 69% in that period. So it's good to see it climbing back up. The rise has some hopeful, but turnarounds are often precarious.

With the stock having lost 4.5% in the past week, it's worth taking a look at business performance and seeing if there's any red flags.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

Align Technology saw its EPS decline at a compound rate of 12% per year, over the last three years. The share price decline of 32% is actually steeper than the EPS slippage. So it's likely that the EPS decline has disappointed the market, leaving investors hesitant to buy.

It's probably worth noting we've seen significant insider buying in the last quarter, which we consider a positive. On the other hand, we think the revenue and earnings trends are much more meaningful measures of the business. A Different Perspective

Align Technology shareholders are down 32% for the year, but the market itself is up 23%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. Longer term investors wouldn't be so upset, since they would have made 5%, each year, over five years. It could be that the recent sell-off is an opportunity, so it may be worth checking the fundamental data for signs of a long term growth trend.
