Over the past year, many EQT Corporation (NYSE:EQT) insiders sold a significant stake in the company which may have piqued investors' interest. When evaluating insider transactions, knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more beneficial than knowing whether they are selling, as the latter can be open to many interpretations. However, shareholders should take a deeper look if several insiders are selling stock over a specific time period.

Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

EQT Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

In the last twelve months, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the Chief Human Resources Officer, Lesley Evancho, sold US$1.9m worth of shares at a price of US$41.29 per share. We generally don't like to see insider selling, but the lower the sale price, the more it concerns us. It's of some comfort that this sale was conducted at a price well above the current share price, which is US$36.55. So it is hard to draw any strong conclusion from it.

Does EQT Boast High Insider Ownership?

I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. We usually like to see fairly high levels of insider ownership. EQT insiders own 0.6% of the company, currently worth about US$140m based on the recent share price. Most shareholders would be happy to see this sort of insider ownership, since it suggests that management incentives are well aligned with other shareholders.

So What Does This Data Suggest About EQT Insiders?

The fact that there have been no EQT insider transactions recently certainly doesn't bother us. It's great to see high levels of insider ownership, but looking back over the last year, we don't gain confidence from the EQT insiders selling. In addition to knowing about insider transactions going on, it's beneficial to identify the risks facing EQT.
