We wouldn't blame EOG Resources, Inc. (NYSE:EOG) shareholders if they were a little worried about the fact that Michael Donaldson, the Executive VP recently netted about US$1.4m selling shares at an average price of US$130. However, that sale only accounted for 9.0% of their holding, so arguably it doesn't say much about their conviction.

EOG Resources Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

Notably, that recent sale by Michael Donaldson is the biggest insider sale of EOG Resources shares that we've seen in the last year. That means that even when the share price was slightly below the current price of US$130, an insider wanted to cash in some shares. When an insider sells below the current price, it suggests that they considered that lower price to be fair. That makes us wonder what they think of the (higher) recent valuation. Please do note, however, that sellers may have a variety of reasons for selling, so we don't know for sure what they think of the stock price. This single sale was just 9.0% of Michael Donaldson's stake.

In the last year EOG Resources insiders didn't buy any company stock. You can see the insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last year depicted in the chart below. Insider Ownership

Looking at the total insider shareholdings in a company can help to inform your view of whether they are well aligned with common shareholders. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. EOG Resources insiders own about US$162m worth of shares (which is 0.2% of the company). I like to see this level of insider ownership, because it increases the chances that management are thinking about the best interests of shareholders.
