New Fortress Energy Inc.'s (NASDAQ:NFE) Shares Climb 55% But Its Business Is Yet to Catch Up
New Fortress Energy Inc. (NASDAQ:NFE) shareholders have had their patience rewarded with a 55% share price jump in the last month. But the last month did very little to improve the 55% share price decline over the last year.
Following the firm bounce in price, New Fortress Energy's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 21.7x might make it look like a sell right now compared to the market in the United States, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios below 18x and even P/E's below 10x are quite common. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the elevated P/E.
New Fortress Energy could be doing better as its earnings have been going backwards lately while most other companies have been seeing positive earnings growth. It might be that many expect the dour earnings performance to recover substantially, which has kept the P/E from collapsing. If not, then existing shareholders may be extremely nervous about the viability of the share price.

There's an inherent assumption that a company should outperform the market for P/E ratios like New Fortress Energy's to be considered reasonable.
Taking a look back first, the company's earnings per share growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 52%. At least EPS has managed not to go completely backwards from three years ago in aggregate, thanks to the earlier period of growth. So it appears to us that the company has had a mixed result in terms of growing earnings over that time.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the five analysts covering the company suggest earnings growth is heading into negative territory, declining 114% over the next year. Meanwhile, the broader market is forecast to expand by 15%, which paints a poor picture.
With this information, we find it concerning that New Fortress Energy is trading at a P/E higher than the market. Apparently many investors in the company reject the analyst cohort's pessimism and aren't willing to let go of their stock at any price. There's a very good chance these shareholders are setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/E falls to levels more in line with the negative growth outlook.
The Bottom Line On New Fortress Energy's P/E
New Fortress Energy's P/E is getting right up there since its shares have risen strongly. While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.
We've established that New Fortress Energy currently trades on a much higher than expected P/E for a company whose earnings are forecast to decline. Right now we are increasingly uncomfortable with the high P/E as the predicted future earnings are highly unlikely to support such positive sentiment for long. Unless these conditions improve markedly, it's very challenging to accept these prices as being reasonable.
