Yiren Digital Ltd. (NYSE:YRD) Stock Rockets 29% But Many Are Still Ignoring The Company

Published
NYSE:YRD

Despite an already strong run, Yiren Digital Ltd. (NYSE:YRD) shares have been powering on, with a gain of 29% in the last thirty days. The last 30 days bring the annual gain to a very sharp 39%.

Even after such a large jump in price, given about half the companies in the United States have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") above 18x, you may still consider Yiren Digital as a highly attractive investment with its 2.5x P/E ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so limited.

For instance, Yiren Digital's receding earnings in recent times would have to be some food for thought. It might be that many expect the disappointing earnings performance to continue or accelerate, which has repressed the P/E. However, if this doesn't eventuate then existing shareholders may be feeling optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

How Is Yiren Digital's Growth Trending?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as depressed as Yiren Digital's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the market decidedly.

If we review the last year of earnings, dishearteningly the company's profits fell to the tune of 6.7%. Even so, admirably EPS has lifted 1,138% in aggregate from three years ago, notwithstanding the last 12 months. Accordingly, while they would have preferred to keep the run going, shareholders would probably welcome the medium-term rates of earnings growth.

Weighing that recent medium-term earnings trajectory against the broader market's one-year forecast for expansion of 14% shows it's noticeably more attractive on an annualised basis.

With this information, we find it odd that Yiren Digital is trading at a P/E lower than the market. Apparently some shareholders believe the recent performance has exceeded its limits and have been accepting significantly lower selling prices.

The Bottom Line On Yiren Digital's P/E

Even after such a strong price move, Yiren Digital's P/E still trails the rest of the market significantly. While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.

We've established that Yiren Digital currently trades on a much lower than expected P/E since its recent three-year growth is higher than the wider market forecast. When we see strong earnings with faster-than-market growth, we assume potential risks are what might be placing significant pressure on the P/E ratio. At least price risks look to be very low if recent medium-term earnings trends continue, but investors seem to think future earnings could see a lot of volatility.
