The latest analyst coverage could presage a bad day for Katapult Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ:KPLT), with the analysts making across-the-board cuts to their statutory estimates that might leave shareholders a little shell-shocked. Both revenue and earnings per share (EPS) estimates were cut sharply as the analysts factored in the latest outlook for the business, concluding that they were too optimistic previously. The stock price has risen 10.0% to US$2.20 over the past week. Investors could be forgiven for changing their mind on the business following the downgrade; but it's not clear if the revised forecasts will lead to selling activity.

Following the latest downgrade, the current consensus, from the two analysts covering Katapult Holdings, is for revenues of US$265m in 2022, which would reflect a not inconsiderable 13% reduction in Katapult Holdings' sales over the past 12 months. Following this this downgrade, earnings are now expected to tip over into loss-making territory, with the analysts forecasting losses of US$0.34 per share in 2022. Yet prior to the latest estimates, the analysts had been forecasting revenues of US$327m and losses of US$0.19 per share in 2022. Ergo, there's been a clear change in sentiment, with the analysts administering a notable cut to this year's revenue estimates, while at the same time increasing their loss per share forecasts.

One way to get more context on these forecasts is to look at how they compare to both past performance, and how other companies in the same industry are performing. These estimates imply that sales are expected to slow, with a forecast annualised revenue decline of 13% by the end of 2022. This indicates a significant reduction from annual growth of 45% over the last three years. Compare this with our data, which suggests that other companies in the same industry are, in aggregate, expected to see their revenue grow 8.7% per year. So although its revenues are forecast to shrink, this cloud does not come with a silver lining - Katapult Holdings is expected to lag the wider industry.

The Bottom Line

The most important thing to note from this downgrade is that the consensus increased its forecast losses this year, suggesting all may not be well at Katapult Holdings. Regrettably, they also downgraded their revenue estimates, and the latest forecasts imply the business will grow sales slower than the wider market. Given the serious cut to this year's outlook, it's clear that analysts have turned more bearish on Katapult Holdings, and we wouldn't blame shareholders for feeling a little more cautious themselves.
