Investor Optimism Abounds Light & Wonder, Inc. (NASDAQ:LNW) But Growth Is Lacking

Published
NasdaqGS:LNW

Light & Wonder, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:LNW) price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 2.6x may not look like an appealing investment opportunity when you consider close to half the companies in the Hospitality industry in the United States have P/S ratios below 1.5x. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the elevated P/S.

How Light & Wonder Has Been Performing

Recent times haven't been great for Light & Wonder as its revenue has been rising slower than most other companies. Perhaps the market is expecting future revenue performance to undergo a reversal of fortunes, which has elevated the P/S ratio. If not, then existing shareholders may be very nervous about the viability of the share price.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The High P/S Ratio?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as high as Light & Wonder's is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the industry.

If we review the last year of revenue growth, the company posted a worthy increase of 13%. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 58% overall rise in revenue, aided somewhat by its short-term performance. Accordingly, shareholders would have definitely welcomed those medium-term rates of revenue growth.

Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to climb by 5.7% per annum during the coming three years according to the analysts following the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to expand by 11% per year, which is noticeably more attractive.

With this in consideration, we believe it doesn't make sense that Light & Wonder's P/S is outpacing its industry peers. Apparently many investors in the company are way more bullish than analysts indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock at any price. Only the boldest would assume these prices are sustainable as this level of revenue growth is likely to weigh heavily on the share price eventually.

The Bottom Line On Light & Wonder's P/S

We'd say the price-to-sales ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.

It comes as a surprise to see Light & Wonder trade at such a high P/S given the revenue forecasts look less than stellar. When we see a weak revenue outlook, we suspect the share price faces a much greater risk of declining, bringing back down the P/S figures. At these price levels, investors should remain cautious, particularly if things don't improve.
