KBR's (NYSE:KBR) Upcoming Dividend Will Be Larger Than Last Year's
The board of KBR, Inc. (NYSE:KBR) has announced that it will be increasing its dividend by 11% on the 15th of April to $0.15, up from last year's comparable payment of $0.135. Even though the dividend went up, the yield is still quite low at only 0.9%.

KBR's Earnings Easily Cover The Distributions
It would be nice for the yield to be higher, but we should also check if higher levels of dividend payment would be sustainable. While KBR is not profitable, it is paying out less than 75% of its free cash flow, which means that there is plenty left over for reinvestment into the business. In general, cash flows are more important than the more traditional measures of profit so we feel pretty comfortable with the dividend at this level.
Looking forward, earnings per share is forecast to rise by 191.8% over the next year. If the dividend continues on this path, the payout ratio could be 33% by next year, which we think can be pretty sustainable going forward.
KBR Has A Solid Track Record
Even over a long history of paying dividends, the company's distributions have been remarkably stable. The annual payment during the last 10 years was $0.32 in 2014, and the most recent fiscal year payment was $0.54. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 5.4% a year over that time. The growth of the dividend has been pretty reliable, so we think this can offer investors some nice additional income in their portfolio.
Dividend Growth Potential Is Shaky
Investors who have held shares in the company for the past few years will be happy with the dividend income they have received. Let's not jump to conclusions as things might not be as good as they appear on the surface. Over the past five years, it looks as though KBR's EPS has declined at around 34% a year. Dividend payments are likely to come under some pressure unless EPS can pull out of the nosedive it is in. On the bright side, earnings are predicted to gain some ground over the next year, but until this turns into a pattern we wouldn't be feeling too comfortable.
Our Thoughts On KBR's Dividend
Overall, we always like to see the dividend being raised, but we don't think KBR will make a great income stock. The company is generating plenty of cash, but we still think the dividend is a bit high for comfort. We don't think KBR is a great stock to add to your portfolio if income is your focus.
Investors generally tend to favour companies with a consistent, stable dividend policy as opposed to those operating an irregular one. Still, investors need to consider a host of other factors, apart from dividend payments, when analysing a company. Without at least some growth in earnings per share over time, the dividend will eventually come under pressure either from competition or inflation.
