For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it currently lacks a track record of revenue and profit. But as Peter Lynch said in One Up On Wall Street, 'Long shots almost never pay off.' A loss-making company is yet to prove itself with profit, and eventually the inflow of external capital may dry up.

In contrast to all that, many investors prefer to focus on companies like ABM Industries (NYSE:ABM), which has not only revenues, but also profits. Even if this company is fairly valued by the market, investors would agree that generating consistent profits will continue to provide ABM Industries with the means to add long-term value to shareholders.

ABM Industries' Improving Profits

In the last three years ABM Industries' earnings per share took off; so much so that it's a bit disingenuous to use these figures to try and deduce long term estimates. So it would be better to isolate the growth rate over the last year for our analysis. To the delight of shareholders, ABM Industries' EPS soared from US$2.89 to US$4.07, over the last year. That's a impressive gain of 41%.

Top-line growth is a great indicator that growth is sustainable, and combined with a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin, it's a great way for a company to maintain a competitive advantage in the market. EBIT margins for ABM Industries remained fairly unchanged over the last year, however the company should be pleased to report its revenue growth for the period of 4.0% to US$8.2b. That's a real positive.
