Cintas Corporation (NASDAQ:CTAS) Investors Are Less Pessimistic Than Expected
With a price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 42.8x Cintas Corporation (NASDAQ:CTAS) may be sending very bearish signals at the moment, given that almost half of all companies in the United States have P/E ratios under 16x and even P/E's lower than 9x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so lofty.
With its earnings growth in positive territory compared to the declining earnings of most other companies, Cintas has been doing quite well of late. It seems that many are expecting the company to continue defying the broader market adversity, which has increased investors’ willingness to pay up for the stock. If not, then existing shareholders might be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

There's an inherent assumption that a company should far outperform the market for P/E ratios like Cintas' to be considered reasonable.
If we review the last year of earnings growth, the company posted a worthy increase of 12%. Pleasingly, EPS has also lifted 53% in aggregate from three years ago, partly thanks to the last 12 months of growth. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a great job of growing earnings over that time.
Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 9.3% per annum as estimated by the analysts watching the company. With the market predicted to deliver 13% growth per year, the company is positioned for a weaker earnings result.
In light of this, it's alarming that Cintas' P/E sits above the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are hoping for a turnaround in the company's business prospects, but the analyst cohort is not so confident this will happen. Only the boldest would assume these prices are sustainable as this level of earnings growth is likely to weigh heavily on the share price eventually.
What We Can Learn From Cintas' P/E?
While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.
Our examination of Cintas' analyst forecasts revealed that its inferior earnings outlook isn't impacting its high P/E anywhere near as much as we would have predicted. Right now we are increasingly uncomfortable with the high P/E as the predicted future earnings aren't likely to support such positive sentiment for long. This places shareholders' investments at significant risk and potential investors in danger of paying an excessive premium.
Having said that, be aware Cintas is showing 1 warning sign in our investment analysis, you should know about.
