Conduent Incorporated (NASDAQ:CNDT) Surges 35% Yet Its Low P/S Is No Reason For Excitement

Published
NasdaqGS:CNDT

The Conduent Incorporated (NASDAQ:CNDT) share price has done very well over the last month, posting an excellent gain of 35%. Looking further back, the 18% rise over the last twelve months isn't too bad notwithstanding the strength over the last 30 days.

In spite of the firm bounce in price, Conduent may still be sending bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.2x, since almost half of all companies in the Professional Services industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 1.6x and even P/S higher than 4x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

What Does Conduent's P/S Mean For Shareholders?

Conduent could be doing better as its revenue has been going backwards lately while most other companies have been seeing positive revenue growth. Perhaps the P/S remains low as investors think the prospects of strong revenue growth aren't on the horizon. If you still like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

How Is Conduent's Revenue Growth Trending?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as low as Conduent's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry.

In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 2.4%. As a result, revenue from three years ago have also fallen 10% overall. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been undesirable for the company.

Turning to the outlook, the next year should bring diminished returns, with revenue decreasing 10% as estimated by the dual analysts watching the company. That's not great when the rest of the industry is expected to grow by 5.6%.

With this in consideration, we find it intriguing that Conduent's P/S is closely matching its industry peers. However, shrinking revenues are unlikely to lead to a stable P/S over the longer term. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as the weak outlook is weighing down the shares.

The Key Takeaway

The latest share price surge wasn't enough to lift Conduent's P/S close to the industry median. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

With revenue forecasts that are inferior to the rest of the industry, it's no surprise that Conduent's P/S is on the lower end of the spectrum. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/S as they concede future revenue probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
