Lockheed Martin Corporation Just Beat EPS By 9.8%: Here's What Analysts Think Will Happen Next
A week ago, Lockheed Martin Corporation (NYSE:LMT) came out with a strong set of quarterly numbers that could potentially lead to a re-rate of the stock. Results were good overall, with revenues beating analyst predictions by 7.5% to hit US$17b. Statutory earnings per share (EPS) came in at US$6.39, some 9.8% above whatthe analysts had expected. Earnings are an important time for investors, as they can track a company's performance, look at what the analysts are forecasting for next year, and see if there's been a change in sentiment towards the company. We thought readers would find it interesting to see the analysts latest (statutory) post-earnings forecasts for next year.

Following last week's earnings report, Lockheed Martin's 23 analysts are forecasting 2024 revenues to be US$69.5b, approximately in line with the last 12 months. Statutory earnings per share are forecast to dip 7.2% to US$26.21 in the same period. Yet prior to the latest earnings, the analysts had been anticipated revenues of US$69.3b and earnings per share (EPS) of US$26.04 in 2024. So it's pretty clear that, although the analysts have updated their estimates, there's been no major change in expectations for the business following the latest results.
The analysts reconfirmed their price target of US$488, showing that the business is executing well and in line with expectations. It could also be instructive to look at the range of analyst estimates, to evaluate how different the outlier opinions are from the mean. The most optimistic Lockheed Martin analyst has a price target of US$546 per share, while the most pessimistic values it at US$378. There are definitely some different views on the stock, but the range of estimates is not wide enough as to imply that the situation is unforecastable, in our view.
One way to get more context on these forecasts is to look at how they compare to both past performance, and how other companies in the same industry are performing. We would highlight that revenue is expected to reverse, with a forecast 0.2% annualised decline to the end of 2024. That is a notable change from historical growth of 3.2% over the last five years. By contrast, our data suggests that other companies (with analyst coverage) in the same industry are forecast to see their revenue grow 2.5% annually for the foreseeable future. So although its revenues are forecast to shrink, this cloud does not come with a silver lining - Lockheed Martin is expected to lag the wider industry.
The Bottom Line
The most obvious conclusion is that there's been no major change in the business' prospects in recent times, with the analysts holding their earnings forecasts steady, in line with previous estimates. Fortunately, the analysts also reconfirmed their revenue estimates, suggesting that it's tracking in line with expectations. Although our data does suggest that Lockheed Martin's revenue is expected to perform worse than the wider industry. There was no real change to the consensus price target, suggesting that the intrinsic value of the business has not undergone any major changes with the latest estimates.
With that said, the long-term trajectory of the company's earnings is a lot more important than next year. At Simply Wall St, we have a full range of analyst estimates for Lockheed Martin going out to 2026, and you can see them free on our platform here..
