Insiders At ITT Sold US$1.3m In Stock, Alluding To Potential Weakness
Many ITT Inc. (NYSE:ITT) insiders ditched their stock over the past year, which may be of interest to the company's shareholders. When evaluating insider transactions, knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more beneficial than knowing whether they are selling, as the latter can be open to many interpretations. However, shareholders should take a deeper look if several insiders are selling stock over a specific time period.
While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.

ITT Insider Transactions Over The Last Year
The Independent Director, Donald DeFosset, made the biggest insider sale in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$1.0m worth of shares at a price of US$101 each. That means that even when the share price was below the current price of US$145, an insider wanted to cash in some shares. When an insider sells below the current price, it suggests that they considered that lower price to be fair. That makes us wonder what they think of the (higher) recent valuation. While insider selling is not a positive sign, we can't be sure if it does mean insiders think the shares are fully valued, so it's only a weak sign. This single sale was 54% of Donald DeFosset's stake.

Does ITT Boast High Insider Ownership?
Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. We usually like to see fairly high levels of insider ownership. ITT insiders own about US$52m worth of shares. That equates to 0.4% of the company. We've certainly seen higher levels of insider ownership elsewhere, but these holdings are enough to suggest alignment between insiders and the other shareholders.
So What Does This Data Suggest About ITT Insiders?
There haven't been any insider transactions in the last three months -- that doesn't mean much. We don't take much encouragement from the transactions by ITT insiders. But we do like the fact that insiders own a fair chunk of the company. If you are like me, you may want to think about whether this company will grow or shrink.
