Why Investors Shouldn't Be Surprised By Helios Technologies, Inc.'s (NYSE:HLIO) 34% Share Price Surge
Helios Technologies, Inc. (NYSE:HLIO) shares have continued their recent momentum with a 34% gain in the last month alone. Notwithstanding the latest gain, the annual share price return of 9.0% isn't as impressive.
Following the firm bounce in price, given close to half the companies in the United States have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") below 18x, you may consider Helios Technologies as a stock to avoid entirely with its 46x P/E ratio. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly elevated P/E.
Helios Technologies certainly has been doing a good job lately as it's been growing earnings more than most other companies. It seems that many are expecting the strong earnings performance to persist, which has raised the P/E. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

Does Growth Match The High P/E?
There's an inherent assumption that a company should far outperform the market for P/E ratios like Helios Technologies' to be considered reasonable.
If we review the last year of earnings growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 17%. Still, incredibly EPS has fallen 70% in total from three years ago, which is quite disappointing. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing earnings over that time.
Turning to the outlook, the next year should generate growth of 43% as estimated by the four analysts watching the company. That's shaping up to be materially higher than the 14% growth forecast for the broader market.
In light of this, it's understandable that Helios Technologies' P/E sits above the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting this strong future growth and are willing to pay more for the stock.
What We Can Learn From Helios Technologies' P/E?
Shares in Helios Technologies have built up some good momentum lately, which has really inflated its P/E. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-earnings ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.
As we suspected, our examination of Helios Technologies' analyst forecasts revealed that its superior earnings outlook is contributing to its high P/E. At this stage investors feel the potential for a deterioration in earnings isn't great enough to justify a lower P/E ratio. Unless these conditions change, they will continue to provide strong support to the share price.
