Helios Technologies, Inc.'s (NYSE:HLIO) Popularity With Investors Under Threat As Stock Sinks 29%

Unfortunately for some shareholders, the Helios Technologies, Inc. (NYSE:HLIO) share price has dived 29% in the last thirty days, prolonging recent pain. The drop over the last 30 days has capped off a tough year for shareholders, with the share price down 41% in that time.

Even after such a large drop in price, Helios Technologies' price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 22.6x might still make it look like a sell right now compared to the market in the United States, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios below 16x and even P/E's below 9x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's as high as it is.

Helios Technologies' earnings growth of late has been pretty similar to most other companies. One possibility is that the P/E is high because investors think this modest earnings performance will accelerate. If not, then existing shareholders may be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

How Is Helios Technologies' Growth Trending?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as high as Helios Technologies' is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the market.

Taking a look back first, we see that there was hardly any earnings per share growth to speak of for the company over the past year. This isn't what shareholders were looking for as it means they've been left with a 64% decline in EPS over the last three years in total. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing earnings over that time.

Turning to the outlook, the next year should generate growth of 14% as estimated by the five analysts watching the company. With the market predicted to deliver 14% growth , the company is positioned for a comparable earnings result.

In light of this, it's curious that Helios Technologies' P/E sits above the majority of other companies. Apparently many investors in the company are more bullish than analysts indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock right now. These shareholders may be setting themselves up for disappointment if the P/E falls to levels more in line with the growth outlook.

The Bottom Line On Helios Technologies' P/E

There's still some solid strength behind Helios Technologies' P/E, if not its share price lately. While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.

Our examination of Helios Technologies' analyst forecasts revealed that its market-matching earnings outlook isn't impacting its high P/E as much as we would have predicted. Right now we are uncomfortable with the relatively high share price as the predicted future earnings aren't likely to support such positive sentiment for long. Unless these conditions improve, it's challenging to accept these prices as being reasonable.
