Caterpillar (NYSE:CAT) sheds 6.4% this week, as yearly returns fall more in line with earnings growth
When you buy a stock there is always a possibility that it could drop 100%. But on the bright side, if you buy shares in a high quality company at the right price, you can gain well over 100%. Long term Caterpillar Inc. (NYSE:CAT) shareholders would be well aware of this, since the stock is up 147% in five years. But it's down 6.4% in the last week. But note that the broader market is down 4.0% since last week, and this may have impacted Caterpillar's share price.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.
Over half a decade, Caterpillar managed to grow its earnings per share at 16% a year. This EPS growth is slower than the share price growth of 20% per year, over the same period. This suggests that market participants hold the company in higher regard, these days. That's not necessarily surprising considering the five-year track record of earnings growth.

Having said that, most people consider earnings and revenue growth trends to be a more meaningful guide to the business. It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. As it happens, Caterpillar's TSR for the last 5 years was 175%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.
A Different Perspective
Caterpillar shareholders have received returns of 28% over twelve months (even including dividends), which isn't far from the general market return. That gain looks pretty satisfying, and it is even better than the five-year TSR of 22% per year. Even if the share price growth slows down from here, there's a good chance that this is business worth watching in the long term.
