When we think about how risky a company is, we always like to look at its use of debt, since debt overload can lead to ruin. As with many other companies Builders FirstSource, Inc. (NYSE:BLDR) makes use of debt. But the more important question is: how much risk is that debt creating?
When Is Debt A Problem?
Generally speaking, debt only becomes a real problem when a company can't easily pay it off, either by raising capital or with its own cash flow. How Healthy Is Builders FirstSource's Balance Sheet?
We can see from the most recent balance sheet that Builders FirstSource had liabilities of US$2.03b falling due within a year, and liabilities of US$4.13b due beyond that. On the other hand, it had cash of US$88.1m and US$2.05b worth of receivables due within a year. So its liabilities total US$4.01b more than the combination of its cash and short-term receivables.
Builders FirstSource has a very large market capitalization of US$15.3b, so it could very likely raise cash to ameliorate its balance sheet, if the need arose. However, it is still worthwhile taking a close look at its ability to pay off debt.

Our View
Based on what we've seen Builders FirstSource is not finding it easy, given its EBIT growth rate, but the other factors we considered give us cause to be optimistic. In particular, we are dazzled with its interest cover. When we consider all the elements mentioned above, it seems to us that Builders FirstSource is managing its debt quite well. Having said that, the load is sufficiently heavy that we would recommend any shareholders keep a close eye on it. There's no doubt that we learn most about debt from the balance sheet.
