Debt assists a business until the business has trouble paying it off, either with new capital or with free cash flow. How Healthy Is Builders FirstSource's Balance Sheet?

Zooming in on the latest balance sheet data, we can see that Builders FirstSource had liabilities of US$1.84b due within 12 months and liabilities of US$3.79b due beyond that. Offsetting this, it had US$80.4m in cash and US$1.87b in receivables that were due within 12 months. So it has liabilities totalling US$3.69b more than its cash and near-term receivables, combined.

This deficit isn't so bad because Builders FirstSource is worth a massive US$12.7b, and thus could probably raise enough capital to shore up its balance sheet, if the need arose. However, it is still worthwhile taking a close look at its ability to pay off debt.

We measure a company's debt load relative to its earnings power by looking at its net debt divided by its earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) and by calculating how easily its earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) cover its interest expense (interest cover). Zooming out, Builders FirstSource seems to use debt quite reasonably; and that gets the nod from us. After all, sensible leverage can boost returns on equity.
