Possible Bearish Signals With Air Lease Insiders Disposing Stock

Published
NYSE:AL

In the last year, many Air Lease Corporation (NYSE:AL) insiders sold a substantial stake in the company which may have sparked shareholders' attention. When evaluating insider transactions, knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more beneficial than knowing whether they are selling, as the latter can be open to many interpretations. However, shareholders should take a deeper look if several insiders are selling stock over a specific time period.

While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.

Air Lease Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

The CEO, President & Director, John Plueger, made the biggest insider sale in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$2.8m worth of shares at a price of US$40.27 each. So it's clear an insider wanted to take some cash off the table, even below the current price of US$49.37. As a general rule we consider it to be discouraging when insiders are selling below the current price, because it suggests they were happy with a lower valuation. Please do note, however, that sellers may have a variety of reasons for selling, so we don't know for sure what they think of the stock price. It is worth noting that this sale was only 8.4% of John Plueger's holding.

Air Lease Insiders Are Selling The Stock

Over the last three months, we've seen significant insider selling at Air Lease. In total, insiders sold US$1.6m worth of shares in that time, and we didn't record any purchases whatsoever. This may suggest that some insiders think that the shares are not cheap.

Insider Ownership Of Air Lease

For a common shareholder, it is worth checking how many shares are held by company insiders. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. It's great to see that Air Lease insiders own 6.5% of the company, worth about US$363m. I like to see this level of insider ownership, because it increases the chances that management are thinking about the best interests of shareholders.
