Energous Starts Generating A Small Amount Of Product Revenue

Summary Energous has finally started shipping measurable quantities of product, around 10 years after it was founded. Product revenues remain quite limited though, estimated at around $0.1 million for the first half of 2022. Product margins also appear to be highly negative due to the limited volumes at the moment. Cash burn for the first half of 2022 was $13.4 million, slightly higher than my expectations.

Energous gets landmark FCC approval, publishes Q2 report

Energous (NASDAQ:WATT) received a landmark Federal Communications Commission (FCC) approval for its new 15W WattUp PowerBridge. CEO Cesar Johnston said the new approval "enables us to now transmit 15x more power than previously allowed without distance limitations." The WattUp PowerBridge transmitter can charge multiple devices simultaneously at-a-distance using RF-based wireless power. It can also act as a data link for connected IoT devices such as sensors, Electronic Shelf Labels, IoT tags and batteryless devices. Multiple transmitters can be meshed together to form a WattUp wireless power network covering unlimited distances for large footprint deployments such as retail stores, industrial warehouses, manufacturing plants and logistics hubs. Energous also simultaneous reported its Q2 numbers, with EPS in line with estimates but revenue missing expectations. Still, turnover rose 26% Y/Y to ~$233,000. The company posted a net loss of $7M and EPS of -$0.09. Energous and retail technology company Flagship launched the first retail deployment of Wiliot IoT Pixel smart tags energized by WattUp PowerBridges, at a major retail store in Sydney.

Energous: Some Revenue Growth Expected In 2022 Along With Significant Cash Burn

Energous expects to have some revenue growth in 2022, although this probably means revenues at around $1 million for the full year. It should not need another equity raise until early-to-mid 2023. However, there is no sightline to escaping the cycle of significant cash burn followed by equity raises to fund further operations. Thus, I'd value Energous at a discount to its current cash balance. It needs to generate at least several million per year in consumer product revenues for its prospects to look better.
