MYR Group (NASDAQ:MYRG) sheds 10% this week, as yearly returns fall more in line with earnings growth
It's been a soft week for MYR Group Inc. (NASDAQ:MYRG) shares, which are down 10%. But that does not change the realty that the stock's performance has been terrific, over five years. To be precise, the stock price is 362% higher than it was five years ago, a wonderful performance by any measure. Arguably, the recent fall is to be expected after such a strong rise. But the real question is whether the business fundamentals can improve over the long term.
Since the long term performance has been good but there's been a recent pullback of 10%, let's check if the fundamentals match the share price.

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).
During five years of share price growth, MYR Group achieved compound earnings per share (EPS) growth of 2.1% per year. This EPS growth is slower than the share price growth of 36% per year, over the same period. This suggests that market participants hold the company in higher regard, these days. That's not necessarily surprising considering the five-year track record of earnings growth. This optimism is visible in its fairly high P/E ratio of 63.02.
You can see how EPS has changed over time in the image below (click on the chart to see the exact values).
We consider it positive that insiders have made significant purchases in the last year. Even so, future earnings will be far more important to whether current shareholders make money. Dive deeper into the earnings by checking this interactive graph of MYR Group's earnings, revenue and cash flow.
A Different Perspective
MYR Group provided a TSR of 3.4% over the last twelve months. But that was short of the market average. It's probably a good sign that the company has an even better long term track record, having provided shareholders with an annual TSR of 36% over five years. It may well be that this is a business worth popping on the watching, given the continuing positive reception, over time, from the market. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand MYR Group better, we need to consider many other factors. Even so, be aware that MYR Group is showing 1 warning sign in our investment analysis , you should know about...
