MYR Group Inc. (NASDAQ:MYRG) Stocks Pounded By 27% But Not Lagging Market On Growth Or Pricing

The MYR Group Inc. (NASDAQ:MYRG) share price has fared very poorly over the last month, falling by a substantial 27%. The drop over the last 30 days has capped off a tough year for shareholders, with the share price down 30% in that time.

In spite of the heavy fall in price, MYR Group may still be sending very bearish signals at the moment with a price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 33.4x, since almost half of all companies in the United States have P/E ratios under 17x and even P/E's lower than 10x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so lofty.

With earnings that are retreating more than the market's of late, MYR Group has been very sluggish. One possibility is that the P/E is high because investors think the company will turn things around completely and accelerate past most others in the market. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

How Is MYR Group's Growth Trending?

MYR Group's P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very strong growth, and importantly, perform much better than the market.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 45% decrease to the company's bottom line. The last three years don't look nice either as the company has shrunk EPS by 35% in aggregate. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of earnings growth.

Turning to the outlook, the next year should generate growth of 107% as estimated by the four analysts watching the company. That's shaping up to be materially higher than the 14% growth forecast for the broader market.

In light of this, it's understandable that MYR Group's P/E sits above the majority of other companies. Apparently shareholders aren't keen to offload something that is potentially eyeing a more prosperous future.

The Final Word

Even after such a strong price drop, MYR Group's P/E still exceeds the rest of the market significantly. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-earnings ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

As we suspected, our examination of MYR Group's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior earnings outlook is contributing to its high P/E. At this stage investors feel the potential for a deterioration in earnings isn't great enough to justify a lower P/E ratio. It's hard to see the share price falling strongly in the near future under these circumstances.

And what about other risks? Every company has them, and we've spotted 1 warning sign for MYR Group you should know about.
