NasdaqGS:HON

The board of Honeywell International Inc. (NASDAQ:HON) has announced that it will be paying its dividend of $1.13 on the 6th of December, an increased payment from last year's comparable dividend. This makes the dividend yield about the same as the industry average at 1.9%.

Honeywell International's Payment Could Potentially Have Solid Earnings Coverage

We aren't too impressed by dividend yields unless they can be sustained over time. Prior to this announcement, Honeywell International's dividend was comfortably covered by both cash flow and earnings. This indicates that quite a large proportion of earnings is being invested back into the business.

Over the next year, EPS is forecast to expand by 48.6%. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we think the payout ratio could be 36% by next year, which is in a pretty sustainable range.

Honeywell International Has A Solid Track Record

Even over a long history of paying dividends, the company's distributions have been remarkably stable. Since 2014, the dividend has gone from $1.80 total annually to $4.52. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 9.6% per annum over that time. Companies like this can be very valuable over the long term, if the decent rate of growth can be maintained.

The Dividend's Growth Prospects Are Limited

Investors who have held shares in the company for the past few years will be happy with the dividend income they have received. Unfortunately, Honeywell International's earnings per share has been essentially flat over the past five years, which means the dividend may not be increased each year. Honeywell International is struggling to find viable investments, so it is returning more to shareholders. While this isn't necessarily a negative, it definitely signals that dividend growth could be constrained in the future unless earnings start to pick up again.

We Really Like Honeywell International's Dividend

Overall, a dividend increase is always good, and we think that Honeywell International is a strong income stock thanks to its track record and growing earnings. The company is easily earning enough to cover its dividend payments and it is great to see that these earnings are being translated into cash flow. Taking this all into consideration, this looks like it could be a good dividend opportunity.

Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable.
