Beam Global's (NASDAQ:BEEM) 27% Price Boost Is Out Of Tune With Revenues

Beam Global (NASDAQ:BEEM) shareholders would be excited to see that the share price has had a great month, posting a 27% gain and recovering from prior weakness. Still, the 30-day jump doesn't change the fact that longer term shareholders have seen their stock decimated by the 57% share price drop in the last twelve months.

Even after such a large jump in price, you could still be forgiven for feeling indifferent about Beam Global's P/S ratio of 1.8x, since the median price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio for the Electrical industry in the United States is also close to 1.6x. However, investors might be overlooking a clear opportunity or potential setback if there is no rational basis for the P/S.

How Beam Global Has Been Performing

Beam Global certainly has been doing a good job lately as it's been growing revenue more than most other companies. It might be that many expect the strong revenue performance to wane, which has kept the P/S ratio from rising. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's not quite in favour.

Is There Some Revenue Growth Forecasted For Beam Global?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should be matching the industry for P/S ratios like Beam Global's to be considered reasonable.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew revenue by an impressive 214% last year. Spectacularly, three year revenue growth has ballooned by several orders of magnitude, thanks in part to the last 12 months of revenue growth. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been superb for the company.

Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 33% per annum as estimated by the five analysts watching the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to expand by 45% per year, which is noticeably more attractive.

In light of this, it's curious that Beam Global's P/S sits in line with the majority of other companies. Apparently many investors in the company are less bearish than analysts indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock right now. These shareholders may be setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with the growth outlook.

What We Can Learn From Beam Global's P/S?

Its shares have lifted substantially and now Beam Global's P/S is back within range of the industry median. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

Our look at the analysts forecasts of Beam Global's revenue prospects has shown that its inferior revenue outlook isn't negatively impacting its P/S as much as we would have predicted. When we see companies with a relatively weaker revenue outlook compared to the industry, we suspect the share price is at risk of declining, sending the moderate P/S lower. A positive change is needed in order to justify the current price-to-sales ratio.
