Is It Smart To Buy Dime Community Bancshares, Inc. (NASDAQ:DCOM) Before It Goes Ex-Dividend?

Published
NasdaqGS:DCOM

Regular readers will know that we love our dividends at Simply Wall St, which is why it's exciting to see Dime Community Bancshares, Inc. (NASDAQ:DCOM) is about to trade ex-dividend in the next three days. The ex-dividend date is usually set to be one business day before the record date which is the cut-off date on which you must be present on the company's books as a shareholder in order to receive the dividend. The ex-dividend date is important as the process of settlement involves two full business days. So if you miss that date, you would not show up on the company's books on the record date. Meaning, you will need to purchase Dime Community Bancshares' shares before the 16th of April to receive the dividend, which will be paid on the 24th of April.

The company's next dividend payment will be US$0.25 per share, on the back of last year when the company paid a total of US$1.00 to shareholders. Last year's total dividend payments show that Dime Community Bancshares has a trailing yield of 5.5% on the current share price of US$18.32. We love seeing companies pay a dividend, but it's also important to be sure that laying the golden eggs isn't going to kill our golden goose! So we need to check whether the dividend payments are covered, and if earnings are growing.

Dividends are usually paid out of company profits, so if a company pays out more than it earned then its dividend is usually at greater risk of being cut. Dime Community Bancshares paid out a comfortable 43% of its profit last year.

When a company paid out less in dividends than it earned in profit, this generally suggests its dividend is affordable. The lower the % of its profit that it pays out, the greater the margin of safety for the dividend if the business enters a downturn.

Have Earnings And Dividends Been Growing?

Stocks with flat earnings can still be attractive dividend payers, but it is important to be more conservative with your approach and demand a greater margin for safety when it comes to dividend sustainability. If earnings decline and the company is forced to cut its dividend, investors could watch the value of their investment go up in smoke. With that in mind, we're not enthused to see that Dime Community Bancshares's earnings per share have remained effectively flat over the past five years. It's better than seeing them drop, certainly, but over the long term, all of the best dividend stocks are able to meaningfully grow their earnings per share.

Many investors will assess a company's dividend performance by evaluating how much the dividend payments have changed over time. Dime Community Bancshares has delivered 1.5% dividend growth per year on average over the past 10 years.

The Bottom Line

Is Dime Community Bancshares worth buying for its dividend? Earnings per share have been flat in recent years, although Dime Community Bancshares reinvests more than half its earnings in the business, which could suggest there are some growth projects that have not yet reached fruition. Overall, Dime Community Bancshares looks like a promising dividend stock in this analysis, and we think it would be worth investigating further.
