Coastal Financial Insiders Sell US$943k Of Stock, Possibly Signalling Caution

Over the past year, many Coastal Financial Corporation (NASDAQ:CCB) insiders sold a significant stake in the company which may have piqued investors' interest. Knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more helpful when evaluating insider transactions, as insider selling can have various explanations. However, if numerous insiders are selling, shareholders should investigate more.

While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Coastal Financial

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the CEO & Director, Eric Sprink, for US$904k worth of shares, at about US$45.20 per share. So what is clear is that an insider saw fit to sell at around the current price of US$41.43. We generally don't like to see insider selling, but the lower the sale price, the more it concerns us. In this case, the big sale took place at around the current price, so it's not too bad (but it's still not a positive).

In the last year Coastal Financial insiders didn't buy any company stock. You can see a visual depiction of insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last 12 months, below. Insiders At Coastal Financial Have Sold Stock Recently

Over the last three months, we've seen a bit of insider selling at Coastal Financial. Insiders sold just US$39k worth of shares in that time. Neither the lack of buying nor the presence of selling is heartening. But the volume sold is so low that it really doesn't bother us.

Insider Ownership Of Coastal Financial

I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. We usually like to see fairly high levels of insider ownership. Coastal Financial insiders own 19% of the company, currently worth about US$103m based on the recent share price. I like to see this level of insider ownership, because it increases the chances that management are thinking about the best interests of shareholders.

What Might The Insider Transactions At Coastal Financial Tell Us?

While there has not been any insider buying in the last three months, there has been selling. But given the selling was modest, we're not worried. It's heartening that insiders own plenty of stock, but we'd like to see more insider buying, since the last year of Coastal Financial insider transactions don't fill us with confidence.
