Insufficient Growth At Adient plc (NYSE:ADNT) Hampers Share Price

With a price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.1x Adient plc (NYSE:ADNT) may be sending bullish signals at the moment, given that almost half of all the Auto Components companies in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 0.7x and even P/S higher than 3x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

What Does Adient's P/S Mean For Shareholders?

Recent times haven't been great for Adient as its revenue has been falling quicker than most other companies. Perhaps the market isn't expecting future revenue performance to improve, which has kept the P/S suppressed. So while you could say the stock is cheap, investors will be looking for improvement before they see it as good value. Or at the very least, you'd be hoping the revenue slide doesn't get any worse if your plan is to pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

How Is Adient's Revenue Growth Trending?

In order to justify its P/S ratio, Adient would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the industry.

Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 4.6%. Regardless, revenue has managed to lift by a handy 7.4% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the earlier period of growth. So we can start by confirming that the company has generally done a good job of growing revenue over that time, even though it had some hiccups along the way.

Turning to the outlook, the next three years should bring diminished returns, with revenue decreasing 0.09% per year as estimated by the nine analysts watching the company. That's not great when the rest of the industry is expected to grow by 44% each year.

With this information, we are not surprised that Adient is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. However, shrinking revenues are unlikely to lead to a stable P/S over the longer term. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as the weak outlook is weighing down the shares.

What We Can Learn From Adient's P/S?

It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

It's clear to see that Adient maintains its low P/S on the weakness of its forecast for sliding revenue, as expected. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/S as they concede future revenue probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
