Zooming In On J&V Energy Technology's Earnings
One key financial ratio used to measure how well a company converts its profit to free cash flow (FCF) is the accrual ratio. The accrual ratio subtracts the FCF from the profit for a given period, and divides the result by the average operating assets of the company over that time. You could think of the accrual ratio from cashflow as the 'non-FCF profit ratio'.
That means a negative accrual ratio is a good thing, because it shows that the company is bringing in more free cash flow than its profit would suggest. While having an accrual ratio above zero is of little concern, we do think it's worth noting when a company has a relatively high accrual ratio. To quote a 2014 paper by Lewellen and Resutek, "firms with higher accruals tend to be less profitable in the future".
For the year to September 2024, J&V Energy Technology had an accrual ratio of 0.47. As a general rule, that bodes poorly for future profitability. To wit, the company did not generate one whit of free cashflow in that time. Even though it reported a profit of NT$268.9m, a look at free cash flow indicates it actually burnt through NT$2.3b in the last year. It's worth noting that J&V Energy Technology generated positive FCF of NT$1.2b a year ago, so at least they've done it in the past. However, that's not the end of the story. We can look at how unusual items in the profit and loss statement impacted its accrual ratio, as well as explore how dilution is impacting shareholders negatively. The good news for shareholders is that J&V Energy Technology's accrual ratio was much better last year, so this year's poor reading might simply be a case of a short term mismatch between profit and FCF. As a result, some shareholders may be looking for stronger cash conversion in the current year.

To understand the value of a company's earnings growth, it is imperative to consider any dilution of shareholders' interests. As it happens, J&V Energy Technology issued 14% more new shares over the last year. Therefore, each share now receives a smaller portion of profit. To talk about net income, without noticing earnings per share, is to be distracted by the big numbers while ignoring the smaller numbers that talk to per share value. You can see a chart of J&V Energy Technology's EPS by clicking here.
How Is Dilution Impacting J&V Energy Technology's Earnings Per Share (EPS)?
J&V Energy Technology has improved its profit over the last three years, with an annualized gain of 378% in that time. In comparison, earnings per share only gained 244% over the same period. Net income was down 75% over the last twelve months. Unfortunately for shareholders, though, the earnings per share result was even worse, declining 77%. And so, you can see quite clearly that dilution is influencing shareholder earnings.
In the long term, if J&V Energy Technology's earnings per share can increase, then the share price should too. But on the other hand, we'd be far less excited to learn profit (but not EPS) was improving. For that reason, you could say that EPS is more important that net income in the long run, assuming the goal is to assess whether a company's share price might grow.
The Impact Of Unusual Items On Profit
The fact that the company had unusual items boosting profit by NT$373m, in the last year, probably goes some way to explain why its accrual ratio was so weak. We can't deny that higher profits generally leave us optimistic, but we'd prefer it if the profit were to be sustainable. When we analysed the vast majority of listed companies worldwide, we found that significant unusual items are often not repeated. And, after all, that's exactly what the accounting terminology implies. J&V Energy Technology had a rather significant contribution from unusual items relative to its profit to September 2024. As a result, we can surmise that the unusual items are making its statutory profit significantly stronger than it would otherwise be.
Our Take On J&V Energy Technology's Profit Performance
J&V Energy Technology didn't back up its earnings with free cashflow, but this isn't too surprising given profits were inflated by unusual items. Meanwhile, the new shares issued mean that shareholders now own less of the company, unless they tipped in more cash themselves. On reflection, the above-mentioned factors give us the strong impression that J&V Energy Technology'sunderlying earnings power is not as good as it might seem, based on the statutory profit numbers.
