Did You Participate In Any Of Apaq Technology's (TPE:6449) Fantastic 120% Return ?
Apaq Technology Co., Ltd. (TPE:6449) shareholders might be concerned after seeing the share price drop 12% in the last month. But the silver lining is the stock is up over five years. However we are not very impressed because the share price is only up 78%, less than the market return of 127%.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.
During five years of share price growth, Apaq Technology actually saw its EPS drop 0.5% per year.
By glancing at these numbers, we'd posit that the decline in earnings per share is not representative of how the business has changed over the years. Since the change in EPS doesn't seem to correlate with the change in share price, it's worth taking a look at other metrics.
The modest 1.9% dividend yield is unlikely to be propping up the share price. On the other hand, Apaq Technology's revenue is growing nicely, at a compound rate of 7.6% over the last five years. In that case, the company may be sacrificing current earnings per share to drive growth.

What About Dividends?
It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. In the case of Apaq Technology, it has a TSR of 120% for the last 5 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
A Different Perspective
It's good to see that Apaq Technology has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 59% in the last twelve months. And that does include the dividend. Since the one-year TSR is better than the five-year TSR (the latter coming in at 17% per year), it would seem that the stock's performance has improved in recent times. Someone with an optimistic perspective could view the recent improvement in TSR as indicating that the business itself is getting better with time. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Apaq Technology better, we need to consider many other factors. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 2 warning signs with Apaq Technology (at least 1 which is potentially serious) , and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
