As a general rule, we think profitable companies are less risky than companies that lose money. However, sometimes companies receive a one-off boost (or reduction) to their profit, and it's not always clear whether statutory profits are a good guide, going forward. In this article, we'll look at how useful this year's statutory profit is, when analysing EISO Enterprise (GTSM:5291).

While EISO Enterprise was able to generate revenue of NT$1.15b in the last twelve months, we think its profit result of NT$60.5m was more important. The good news is that the company managed to grow its revenue over the last three years, and also move from loss-making to profitable.

Not all profits are equal, and we can learn more about the nature of a company's past profitability by diving deeper into the financial statements. In this article we'll look at how EISO Enterprise is impacting shareholders by issuing new shares, as well as how unusual items have affected the income line. In order to understand the potential for per share returns, it is essential to consider how much a company is diluting shareholders. As it happens, EISO Enterprise issued 6.3% more new shares over the last year. That means its earnings are split among a greater number of shares. To celebrate net income while ignoring dilution is like rejoicing because you have a single slice of a larger pizza, but ignoring the fact that the pizza is now cut into many more slices. How Is Dilution Impacting EISO Enterprise's Earnings Per Share? (EPS)

EISO Enterprise was losing money three years ago. Even looking at the last year, profit was still down 13%. Sadly, earnings per share fell further, down a full 24% in that time. So you can see that the dilution has had a bit of an impact on shareholders. Therefore, the dilution is having a noteworthy influence on shareholder returns. And so, you can see quite clearly that dilution is influencing shareholder earnings.

In the long term, if EISO Enterprise's earnings per share can increase, then the share price should too. But on the other hand, we'd be far less excited to learn profit (but not EPS) was improving. For that reason, you could say that EPS is more important that net income in the long run, assuming the goal is to assess whether a company's share price might grow.

How Do Unusual Items Influence Profit?

Finally, we should also consider the fact that unusual items boosted EISO Enterprise's net profit by NT$13m over the last year. While it's always nice to have higher profit, a large contribution from unusual items sometimes dampens our enthusiasm. We ran the numbers on most publicly listed companies worldwide, and it's very common for unusual items to be once-off in nature. And, after all, that's exactly what the accounting terminology implies. If EISO Enterprise doesn't see that contribution repeat, then all else being equal we'd expect its profit to drop over the current year.

Our Take On EISO Enterprise's Profit Performance

To sum it all up, EISO Enterprise got a nice boost to profit from unusual items; without that, its statutory results would have looked worse. And furthermore, it went and issued plenty of new shares, ensuring that each shareholder (who did not tip more money in) now owns a smaller proportion of the company. Considering all this we'd argue EISO Enterprise's profits probably give an overly generous impression of its sustainable level of profitability. In light of this, if you'd like to do more analysis on the company, it's vital to be informed of the risks involved.
