What Can The Trends At Ares International (TPE:2471) Tell Us About Their Returns?
Did you know there are some financial metrics that can provide clues of a potential multi-bagger? In a perfect world, we'd like to see a company investing more capital into its business and ideally the returns earned from that capital are also increasing. Basically this means that a company has profitable initiatives that it can continue to reinvest in, which is a trait of a compounding machine. So when we looked at Ares International (TPE:2471) and its trend of ROCE, we really liked what we saw.
Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What is it?
Just to clarify if you're unsure, ROCE is a metric for evaluating how much pre-tax income (in percentage terms) a company earns on the capital invested in its business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for Ares International:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.093 = NT$82m ÷ (NT$1.2b - NT$345m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2020).
Thus, Ares International has an ROCE of 9.3%. Ultimately, that's a low return and it under-performs the IT industry average of 15%.

How Are Returns Trending?
Ares International has not disappointed with their ROCE growth. The figures show that over the last five years, ROCE has grown 46% whilst employing roughly the same amount of capital. So our take on this is that the business has increased efficiencies to generate these higher returns, all the while not needing to make any additional investments. It's worth looking deeper into this though because while it's great that the business is more efficient, it might also mean that going forward the areas to invest internally for the organic growth are lacking.
What We Can Learn From Ares International's ROCE
As discussed above, Ares International appears to be getting more proficient at generating returns since capital employed has remained flat but earnings (before interest and tax) are up. And a remarkable 185% total return over the last five years tells us that investors are expecting more good things to come in the future. In light of that, we think it's worth looking further into this stock because if Ares International can keep these trends up, it could have a bright future ahead.
