Laster Tech Co., Ltd. (TWSE:3346) has announced that it will be increasing its dividend from last year's comparable payment on the 25th of September to NT$1.5. This makes the dividend yield 3.8%, which is above the industry average.

Laster Tech's Dividend Is Well Covered By Earnings
While it is great to have a strong dividend yield, we should also consider whether the payment is sustainable. Prior to this announcement, Laster Tech's earnings easily covered the dividend, but free cash flows were negative. Since a dividend means the company is paying out cash to investors, this could prove to be a problem in the future.
Looking forward, earnings per share is forecast to rise by 18.3% over the next year. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio will be 46%, which is in the range that makes us comfortable with the sustainability of the dividend.
Dividend Volatility
Although the company has a long dividend history, it has been cut at least once in the last 10 years. Since 2014, the dividend has gone from NT$0.30 total annually to NT$1.50. This implies that the company grew its distributions at a yearly rate of about 17% over that duration. Despite the rapid growth in the dividend over the past number of years, we have seen the payments go down the past as well, so that makes us cautious.
We Could See Laster Tech's Dividend Growing
With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to see if earnings per share is growing. It's encouraging to see that Laster Tech has been growing its earnings per share at 9.6% a year over the past five years. While on an earnings basis, this company looks appealing as an income stock, the cash payout ratio still makes us cautious.
An additional note is that the company has been raising capital by issuing stock equal to 14% of shares outstanding in the last 12 months. Trying to grow the dividend when issuing new shares reminds us of the ancient Greek tale of Sisyphus - perpetually pushing a boulder uphill. Companies that consistently issue new shares are often suboptimal from a dividend perspective.
Our Thoughts On Laster Tech's Dividend
Overall, we always like to see the dividend being raised, but we don't think Laster Tech will make a great income stock. While Laster Tech is earning enough to cover the payments, the cash flows are lacking. We would probably look elsewhere for an income investment.
It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one. Meanwhile, despite the importance of dividend payments, they are not the only factors our readers should know when assessing a company. To that end, Laster Tech has 3 warning signs (and 1 which is concerning) we think you should know about.
