Champion Microelectronic (TWSE:3257) Will Pay A Smaller Dividend Than Last Year
The board of Champion Microelectronic Corporation (TWSE:3257) has announced that the dividend on 7th of May will be reduced by 33% from last year's NT$3.00 to NT$2.00. The dividend yield of 5.2% is still a nice boost to shareholder returns, despite the cut.

Champion Microelectronic's Future Dividend Projections Appear Well Covered By Earnings
If the payments aren't sustainable, a high yield for a few years won't matter that much. Before this announcement, Champion Microelectronic was paying out 111% of what it was earning, and not generating any free cash flows either. Paying out such a large dividend compared to earnings while also not generating any free cash flow would definitely be difficult to keep up.
Looking forward, earnings per share could rise by 25.2% over the next year if the trend from the last few years continues. Assuming the dividend continues along the course it has been charting recently, our estimates show the payout ratio being 64% which brings it into quite a comfortable range.
Dividend Volatility
The company's dividend history has been marked by instability, with at least one cut in the last 10 years. Since 2015, the annual payment back then was NT$1.63, compared to the most recent full-year payment of NT$3.00. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 6.3% per annum over that time. It's good to see the dividend growing at a decent rate, but the dividend has been cut at least once in the past. Champion Microelectronic might have put its house in order since then, but we remain cautious.
Dividend Growth Could Be Constrained
Growing earnings per share could be a mitigating factor when considering the past fluctuations in the dividend. Champion Microelectronic has impressed us by growing EPS at 25% per year over the past five years. Strong earnings is nice to see, but unless this can be sustained on minimal reinvestment of profits, we would question whether dividends will follow suit.
Champion Microelectronic's Dividend Doesn't Look Sustainable
Overall, the dividend looks like it may have been a bit high, which explains why it has now been cut. Strong earnings growth means Champion Microelectronic has the potential to be a good dividend stock in the future, despite the current payments being at elevated levels. This company is not in the top tier of income providing stocks.
Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable. Meanwhile, despite the importance of dividend payments, they are not the only factors our readers should know when assessing a company. Just as an example, we've come across 3 warning signs for Champion Microelectronic you should be aware of, and 2 of them shouldn't be ignored. Looking for more high-yielding dividend ideas?
