Investors Who Bought M31 Technology (GTSM:6643) Shares Three Years Ago Are Now Up 15%
M31 Technology Corporation (GTSM:6643) shareholders might be concerned after seeing the share price drop 14% in the last quarter. On the other hand the share price is higher than it was three years ago. Arguably you'd have been better off buying an index fund, because the gain of 15% in three years isn't amazing.

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.
M31 Technology was able to grow its EPS at 17% per year over three years, sending the share price higher. The average annual share price increase of 5% is actually lower than the EPS growth. Therefore, it seems the market has moderated its expectations for growth, somewhat.

What About Dividends?
When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. As it happens, M31 Technology's TSR for the last 3 years was 23%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
A Different Perspective
M31 Technology produced a TSR of 11% over the last year. It's always nice to make money but this return falls short of the market return which was about 50% for the year. On the bright side that gain is actually better than the average return of 7% over the last three years, implying that the company is doing better recently. If the share price is up as a result of improved business performance, then this kind of improvement may be sustained. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 2 warning signs with M31 Technology , and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
