Will Grand Process Technology (GTSM:3131) Multiply In Value Going Forward?
If we want to find a potential multi-bagger, often there are underlying trends that can provide clues. Firstly, we'll want to see a proven return on capital employed (ROCE) that is increasing, and secondly, an expanding base of capital employed. Basically this means that a company has profitable initiatives that it can continue to reinvest in, which is a trait of a compounding machine. Although, when we looked at Grand Process Technology (GTSM:3131), it didn't seem to tick all of these boxes.
Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What is it?
For those that aren't sure what ROCE is, it measures the amount of pre-tax profits a company can generate from the capital employed in its business. To calculate this metric for Grand Process Technology, this is the formula:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.16 = NT$513m ÷ (NT$5.0b - NT$1.9b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2020).
Therefore, Grand Process Technology has an ROCE of 16%. In absolute terms, that's a satisfactory return, but compared to the Semiconductor industry average of 10% it's much better.

The Trend Of ROCE
In terms of Grand Process Technology's historical ROCE movements, the trend isn't fantastic. To be more specific, ROCE has fallen from 25% over the last five years. However, given capital employed and revenue have both increased it appears that the business is currently pursuing growth, at the consequence of short term returns. And if the increased capital generates additional returns, the business, and thus shareholders, will benefit in the long run.
