Shareholders of International Games System (GTSM:3293) Must Be Delighted With Their 485% Total Return
For us, stock picking is in large part the hunt for the truly magnificent stocks. Not every pick can be a winner, but when you pick the right stock, you can win big. One such superstar is International Games System Co., LTD (GTSM:3293), which saw its share price soar 414% in three years. And in the last month, the share price has gained 6.6%. But the price may well have benefitted from a buoyant market, since stocks have gained 8.6% in the last thirty days.

In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.
During three years of share price growth, International Games System achieved compound earnings per share growth of 51% per year. In comparison, the 73% per year gain in the share price outpaces the EPS growth. So it's fair to assume the market has a higher opinion of the business than it did three years ago. That's not necessarily surprising considering the three-year track record of earnings growth.

We know that International Games System has improved its bottom line over the last three years, but what does the future have in store? This free interactive report on International Games System's balance sheet strength is a great place to start, if you want to investigate the stock further.
What About Dividends?
It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. We note that for International Games System the TSR over the last 3 years was 485%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.
A Different Perspective
It's nice to see that International Games System shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 86% over the last year. That's including the dividend. That's better than the annualised return of 42% over half a decade, implying that the company is doing better recently. Given the share price momentum remains strong, it might be worth taking a closer look at the stock, lest you miss an opportunity. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand International Games System better, we need to consider many other factors.
