Success Prime Corporation (TWSE:2496) Stock Catapults 25% Though Its Price And Business Still Lag The Market
Success Prime Corporation (TWSE:2496) shareholders have had their patience rewarded with a 25% share price jump in the last month. Looking back a bit further, it's encouraging to see the stock is up 41% in the last year.
Even after such a large jump in price, Success Prime's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 13.8x might still make it look like a buy right now compared to the market in Taiwan, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios above 24x and even P/E's above 41x are quite common. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the reduced P/E.
With earnings growth that's exceedingly strong of late, Success Prime has been doing very well. It might be that many expect the strong earnings performance to degrade substantially, which has repressed the P/E. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

In order to justify its P/E ratio, Success Prime would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the market.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 32% gain to the company's bottom line. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 66% overall rise in EPS, aided by its short-term performance. Therefore, it's fair to say the earnings growth recently has been superb for the company.
This is in contrast to the rest of the market, which is expected to grow by 26% over the next year, materially higher than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.
With this information, we can see why Success Prime is trading at a P/E lower than the market. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on to something they believe will continue to trail the bourse.
The Final Word
Success Prime's stock might have been given a solid boost, but its P/E certainly hasn't reached any great heights. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-earnings ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.
As we suspected, our examination of Success Prime revealed its three-year earnings trends are contributing to its low P/E, given they look worse than current market expectations. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/E as they concede future earnings probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. If recent medium-term earnings trends continue, it's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
