Topkey Corporation (TPE:4536) shareholders might be concerned after seeing the share price drop 10% in the last quarter. On the other hand the share price is higher than it was three years ago. Arguably you'd have been better off buying an index fund, because the gain of 64% in three years isn't amazing.

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.

Over the last three years, Topkey failed to grow earnings per share, which fell 0.6% (annualized).

Companies are not always focussed on EPS growth in the short term, and looking at how the share price has reacted, we don't think EPS is the most important metric for Topkey at the moment. Therefore, it makes sense to look into other metrics.

The dividend is no better now than it was three years ago, so that is unlikely to have driven the share price higher. And revenue growth isn't impressive. It may be that a closer look at revenue trends can explain the share price.

What About Dividends?

It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. We note that for Topkey the TSR over the last 3 years was 82%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!

A Different Perspective

Topkey shareholders are up 16% for the year (even including dividends). But that was short of the market average. On the bright side, that's still a gain, and it's actually better than the average return of 10% over half a decade This suggests the company might be improving over time. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
