Tatung Co., Ltd. (TWSE:2371) shareholders have seen the share price descend 17% over the month. But that doesn't change the fact that shareholders have received really good returns over the last five years. We think most investors would be happy with the 158% return, over that period. We think it's more important to dwell on the long term returns than the short term returns. Ultimately business performance will determine whether the stock price continues the positive long term trend.

Let's take a look at the underlying fundamentals over the longer term, and see if they've been consistent with shareholders returns.

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

During the five years of share price growth, Tatung moved from a loss to profitability. That kind of transition can be an inflection point that justifies a strong share price gain, just as we have seen here.

A Different Perspective

Tatung's TSR for the year was broadly in line with the market average, at 32%. That gain looks pretty satisfying, and it is even better than the five-year TSR of 21% per year. Even if the share price growth slows down from here, there's a good chance that this is business worth watching in the long term. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Tatung better, we need to consider many other factors.
