Optimism for Luxe Green Energy Technology (TWSE:1529) has grown this past week, despite five-year decline in earnings

Published
TWSE:1529

Luxe Green Energy Technology Co., Ltd. (TWSE:1529) shareholders have seen the share price descend 16% over the month. But that doesn't change the fact that the returns over the last five years have been very strong. It's fair to say most would be happy with 144% the gain in that time. We think it's more important to dwell on the long term returns than the short term returns. Of course, that doesn't necessarily mean it's cheap now.

After a strong gain in the past week, it's worth seeing if longer term returns have been driven by improving fundamentals.

While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

Luxe Green Energy Technology's earnings per share are down 2.7% per year, despite strong share price performance over five years.

By glancing at these numbers, we'd posit that the decline in earnings per share is not representative of how the business has changed over the years. Therefore, it's worth taking a look at other metrics to try to understand the share price movements.

We doubt the modest 0.9% dividend yield is attracting many buyers to the stock. The revenue reduction of 7.0% per year is not a positive. It certainly surprises us that the share price is up, but perhaps a closer examination of the data will yield answers.

What About Dividends?

It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. As it happens, Luxe Green Energy Technology's TSR for the last 5 years was 187%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!

A Different Perspective

Luxe Green Energy Technology shareholders are down 9.1% for the year (even including dividends), but the market itself is up 32%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. On the bright side, long term shareholders have made money, with a gain of 23% per year over half a decade. It could be that the recent sell-off is an opportunity, so it may be worth checking the fundamental data for signs of a long term growth trend. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important.
