Inmax Holding (GTSM:1591) Could Be At Risk Of Shrinking As A Company
What underlying fundamental trends can indicate that a company might be in decline? More often than not, we'll see a declining return on capital employed (ROCE) and a declining amount of capital employed. This combination can tell you that not only is the company investing less, it's earning less on what it does invest. So after glancing at the trends within Inmax Holding (GTSM:1591), we weren't too hopeful.
What is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?
For those that aren't sure what ROCE is, it measures the amount of pre-tax profits a company can generate from the capital employed in its business. The formula for this calculation on Inmax Holding is:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.031 = NT$13m ÷ (NT$737m - NT$321m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to December 2020).
Therefore, Inmax Holding has an ROCE of 3.1%. In absolute terms, that's a low return and it also under-performs the Machinery industry average of 9.4%.

What Does the ROCE Trend For Inmax Holding Tell Us?
There is reason to be cautious about Inmax Holding, given the returns are trending downwards. About five years ago, returns on capital were 14%, however they're now substantially lower than that as we saw above. And on the capital employed front, the business is utilizing roughly the same amount of capital as it was back then. Since returns are falling and the business has the same amount of assets employed, this can suggest it's a mature business that hasn't had much growth in the last five years. If these trends continue, we wouldn't expect Inmax Holding to turn into a multi-bagger.
On a side note, Inmax Holding's current liabilities have increased over the last five years to 44% of total assets, effectively distorting the ROCE to some degree. Without this increase, it's likely that ROCE would be even lower than 3.1%. What this means is that in reality, a rather large portion of the business is being funded by the likes of the company's suppliers or short-term creditors, which can bring some risks of its own.
The Bottom Line
In the end, the trend of lower returns on the same amount of capital isn't typically an indication that we're looking at a growth stock. In spite of that, the stock has delivered a 19% return to shareholders who held over the last five years. Regardless, we don't like the trends as they are and if they persist, we think you might find better investments elsewhere.
