Sembcorp Industries' (SGX:U96) Dividend Will Be Increased To SGD0.17
Sembcorp Industries Ltd's (SGX:U96) dividend will be increasing from last year's payment of the same period to SGD0.17 on 13th of May. Despite this raise, the dividend yield of 3.5% is only a modest boost to shareholder returns.
Sembcorp Industries' Projected Earnings Seem Likely To Cover Future Distributions
While yield is important, another factor to consider about a company's dividend is whether the current payout levels are feasible. Before making this announcement, Sembcorp Industries was earning enough to cover the dividend, but it wasn't generating any free cash flows. In general, we consider cash flow to be more important than earnings, so we would be cautious about relying on the sustainability of this dividend.
Looking forward, earnings per share is forecast to rise by 22.5% over the next year. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we think the payout ratio could be 31% by next year, which is in a pretty sustainable range.

Dividend Volatility
While the company has been paying a dividend for a long time, it has cut the dividend at least once in the last 10 years. The annual payment during the last 10 years was SGD0.10 in 2015, and the most recent fiscal year payment was SGD0.23. This implies that the company grew its distributions at a yearly rate of about 8.7% over that duration. It's good to see the dividend growing at a decent rate, but the dividend has been cut at least once in the past. Sembcorp Industries might have put its house in order since then, but we remain cautious.
The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow
Growing earnings per share could be a mitigating factor when considering the past fluctuations in the dividend. It's encouraging to see that Sembcorp Industries has been growing its earnings per share at 31% a year over the past five years. Sembcorp Industries is clearly able to grow rapidly while still returning cash to shareholders, positioning it to become a strong dividend payer in the future.
Our Thoughts On Sembcorp Industries' Dividend
Overall, this is probably not a great income stock, even though the dividend is being raised at the moment. While the low payout ratio is a redeeming feature, this is offset by the minimal cash to cover the payments. We would probably look elsewhere for an income investment.
It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one.
