Sunpower Group Ltd.'s (SGX:5GD) Shares Bounce 26% But Its Business Still Trails The Market
The Sunpower Group Ltd. (SGX:5GD) share price has done very well over the last month, posting an excellent gain of 26%. Unfortunately, the gains of the last month did little to right the losses of the last year with the stock still down 17% over that time.
In spite of the firm bounce in price, Sunpower Group may still be sending very bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 5.6x, since almost half of all companies in Singapore have P/E ratios greater than 12x and even P/E's higher than 21x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so limited.
Sunpower Group certainly has been doing a great job lately as it's been growing earnings at a really rapid pace. One possibility is that the P/E is low because investors think this strong earnings growth might actually underperform the broader market in the near future. If that doesn't eventuate, then existing shareholders have reason to be quite optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

What Are Growth Metrics Telling Us About The Low P/E?
Sunpower Group's P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very poor growth or even falling earnings, and importantly, perform much worse than the market.
If we review the last year of earnings growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 61%. However, the latest three year period hasn't been as great in aggregate as it didn't manage to provide any growth at all. So it appears to us that the company has had a mixed result in terms of growing earnings over that time.
This is in contrast to the rest of the market, which is expected to grow by 12% over the next year, materially higher than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.
With this information, we can see why Sunpower Group is trading at a P/E lower than the market. It seems most investors are expecting to see the recent limited growth rates continue into the future and are only willing to pay a reduced amount for the stock.
The Bottom Line On Sunpower Group's P/E
Shares in Sunpower Group are going to need a lot more upward momentum to get the company's P/E out of its slump. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
We've established that Sunpower Group maintains its low P/E on the weakness of its recent three-year growth being lower than the wider market forecast, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in earnings isn't great enough to justify a higher P/E ratio. If recent medium-term earnings trends continue, it's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
We don't want to rain on the parade too much, but we did also find 1 warning sign for Sunpower Group that you need to be mindful of.
