Improved Earnings Required Before Sunpower Group Ltd. (SGX:5GD) Stock's 44% Jump Looks Justified
Sunpower Group Ltd. (SGX:5GD) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 44% after a shaky period beforehand. Looking back a bit further, it's encouraging to see the stock is up 44% in the last year.
In spite of the firm bounce in price, Sunpower Group may still be sending bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 10.7x, since almost half of all companies in Singapore have P/E ratios greater than 14x and even P/E's higher than 24x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.
For example, consider that Sunpower Group's financial performance has been poor lately as its earnings have been in decline. It might be that many expect the disappointing earnings performance to continue or accelerate, which has repressed the P/E. However, if this doesn't eventuate then existing shareholders may be feeling optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

How Is Sunpower Group's Growth Trending?
There's an inherent assumption that a company should underperform the market for P/E ratios like Sunpower Group's to be considered reasonable.
If we review the last year of earnings, dishearteningly the company's profits fell to the tune of 46%. As a result, earnings from three years ago have also fallen 90% overall. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of earnings growth.
Weighing that medium-term earnings trajectory against the broader market's one-year forecast for expansion of 13% shows it's an unpleasant look.
With this information, we are not surprised that Sunpower Group is trading at a P/E lower than the market. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee the P/E has reached a floor yet with earnings going in reverse. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as recent earnings trends are already weighing down the shares.
The Final Word
Despite Sunpower Group's shares building up a head of steam, its P/E still lags most other companies. It's argued the price-to-earnings ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.
We've established that Sunpower Group maintains its low P/E on the weakness of its sliding earnings over the medium-term, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in earnings isn't great enough to justify a higher P/E ratio. If recent medium-term earnings trends continue, it's hard to see the share price moving strongly in either direction in the near future under these circumstances.
