The excitement of investing in a company that can reverse its fortunes is a big draw for some speculators, so even companies that have no revenue, no profit, and a record of falling short, can manage to find investors. Unfortunately, these high risk investments often have little probability of ever paying off, and many investors pay a price to learn their lesson. While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else investors will move on and the company will wither away.

So if this idea of high risk and high reward doesn't suit, you might be more interested in profitable, growing companies, like MTQ (SGX:M05). While profit isn't the sole metric that should be considered when investing, it's worth recognising businesses that can consistently produce it.

MTQ's Improving Profits

MTQ has undergone a massive growth in earnings per share over the last three years. So much so that this three year growth rate wouldn't be a fair assessment of the company's future. As a result, we'll zoom in on growth over the last year, instead. In impressive fashion, MTQ's EPS grew from S$0.019 to S$0.043, over the previous 12 months. It's a rarity to see 131% year-on-year growth like that.

Careful consideration of revenue growth and earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margins can help inform a view on the sustainability of the recent profit growth. MTQ's EBIT margins are flat but, worryingly, its revenue is actually down. Suffice it to say that is not a great sign of growth.

MTQ isn't a huge company, given its market capitalisation of S$69m. That makes it extra important to check on its balance sheet strength.

Are MTQ Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

It's pleasing to see company leaders with putting their money on the line, so to speak, because it increases alignment of incentives between the people running the business, and its true owners. MTQ followers will find comfort in knowing that insiders have a significant amount of capital that aligns their best interests with the wider shareholder group. Indeed, they hold S$24m worth of its stock. That's a lot of money, and no small incentive to work hard. That amounts to 35% of the company, demonstrating a degree of high-level alignment with shareholders.

While it's always good to see some strong conviction in the company from insiders through heavy investment, it's also important for shareholders to ask if management compensation policies are reasonable. A brief analysis of the CEO compensation suggests they are. For companies with market capitalisations under S$261m, like MTQ, the median CEO pay is around S$542k.

MTQ's CEO took home a total compensation package worth S$427k in the year leading up to March 2024. That is actually below the median for CEO's of similarly sized companies. CEO remuneration levels are not the most important metric for investors, but when the pay is modest, that does support enhanced alignment between the CEO and the ordinary shareholders. It can also be a sign of a culture of integrity, in a broader sense.

Is MTQ Worth Keeping An Eye On?

MTQ's earnings per share have been soaring, with growth rates sky high. An added bonus for those interested is that management hold a heap of stock and the CEO pay is quite reasonable, illustrating good cash management. The strong EPS improvement suggests the businesses is humming along. MTQ is certainly doing some things right and is well worth investigating. We don't want to rain on the parade too much, but we did also find 3 warning signs for MTQ that you need to be mindful of.
